獨立理工大學協會的英文名稱是：(AITU)，是由眾多美國著名理工院校在1957年成立的一個組織。
獨立理工大學協會最初由十五所高校聯合組成。在那之後最初協會的兩所大學從中離開，並且剩餘十三個成員中的許多大學也經歷了更名和學校兼併。後來，又有九所高校加入到獨立理工大學協會中來並組成了今天的22個現役成員。

美國獨立理工大學協會創立宗旨
獨立理工大學協會是美國理工學校和學院的風向標，其使命是保證美國在全球經濟市場的競爭力併發揮重要作用。通過：
（1）相互間交流想法和做法，以推動和激勵內部成員的創造力、創新和船業精神；
（2）吸收最好的工作經歷和豐富的實踐到大學成員中去；
（3）從K-12起，在工程、科學和專業教育中培養優秀的人才。
