第54屆格萊美頒獎典禮的提名晚會於北京時間2012年2月13日上午在洛杉磯的斯台普斯球館舉辦。

2012年也是格萊美獎項瘦身之後的首度亮相。格萊美組委會於2012年將全部的109項獎項縮身至78項，這其中包括刪除最佳Zydeco等專輯獎項。而此前的最佳流行、最佳R&B與最佳鄉村演唱也將不再分別就性別分類獎項，所有的男女歌手將共同角逐最終的獎盃。

Kanye West共獲得7項提名。Adele，Foo Fighters和Bruno Mars各獲得六項提名，Lil Wayne不負眾望獲得五項提名同時DJ Skrillex也爆冷獲得了五項提名，民謠組合Bon Iver 獲得4項提名。

2011年兩位最熱門的歌手：Adele和Bruno Mars，囊括了年度專輯、年度錄音、年度歌曲三大獎項提名。

中國鋼琴家王羽佳，獲得本屆格萊美最佳古典器樂獨奏家獎提名，作品是和阿巴多合作的拉二和帕格尼尼主題狂想曲。這是王羽佳第二次獲得格萊美提名。獲得該獎提名的還有演奏家米切拉-佩特里Michala Petri ，她與華裔指揮家水藍合作的中國笛子協奏曲唱片入圍。

現年85歲的爵士傳奇託尼・博內特(Tony Bennett)憑藉着專輯《Duets II》成為了專輯榜冠軍最高齡的登頂者，而他同已故英國女歌手艾米・懷恩豪斯(Amy Winehouse)合作的單曲《Body And Soul》入圍2011年最佳合作流行表演獎提名。而兩位説唱界大佬坎耶・韋斯特與Jay-Z合作的專輯《Watch The Throne》則提名最佳説唱表演獎。

2011年的格萊美提名可謂是獨立搖滾大獲全勝的一屆。像捧走多項提名的Bon Iver與英國民謠搖滾Mumford & Sons均出自小唱片公司。此外，格萊美大熱的英國女歌手阿黛爾同樣簽約於英國本土的獨立廠牌XL唱片。接連提名年度唱片製作，年度單曲和最佳新人，藝名Bon Iver的獨立歌手賈斯汀-弗爾諾(Justin Vernon)成為了本屆格萊美提名的最大黑馬。此外，來自英國的民謠搖滾Mumford & Sons同樣爆冷獲得了五項提名。而2011年，格萊美獎的超級紅人泰勒-斯威夫特憑藉專輯《Speak Now》，獲得了三項鄉村類提名。

美國唱片協會主席尼爾・波特諾在當晚的提名演出上登台發言，波特諾説道：“2011年的格萊美獎提名最令人欣慰的地方在於其在選擇上的多樣化，而入選提名的藝人則跨越了各種流派。2011年的提名真正的體現出藝人們的卓越才華，他們在其各自藝術領域上所取得的造詣令人尊敬與讚歎。2011年是格萊美提名晚會的第四屆，而這將為2012年2月份的第54界格萊美頒獎盛宴開啓了一道令人激動的大門。” ^[5] 

第54屆格萊美頒獎典禮北京時間13日上午(美國當地時間12日晚)在洛杉磯舉行。在格萊美音樂頒獎禮舉行前夕，過去6奪格萊美大獎的惠特尼·休斯頓(Whitney Houston )忽然去世的消息，不只令全球歌迷心碎，頒獎禮主席Neil Portnow更是傷痛欲絕，他在格萊美賽前派對上憶述，當惠特尼只有19歲的時候，他跟唱片公司老闆Clive Davis已決定力捧她做樂壇天后，“我還記得，當時她擁有漂亮的臉孔和爆炸頭”。

為悼念故人，今日舉行頒獎禮將會增設追思環節，並請來《夢幻女郎》金像女配角Jennifer Hudson，以及被喻為“Funk音樂女王”的58歲美國女歌手Chaka Khan，重唱惠特尼的金曲，以示致敬。
