惠特尼·休斯頓（Whitney Houston）在格萊美獎頒獎典禮上已經是常客了，八年前她贏得了第一座格萊美獎盃。然而，第36屆格萊美獎代表了惠特妮職業生涯一個新的驚人的高峯。這位歌手和演員令人歎為觀止地表演了《I Will Always Love You》作為整場頒獎禮的開場，隨後觀眾將經常看到惠特妮的身影，最終，她獲得了年度最佳唱片獎，年度最佳專輯獎和最佳流行女歌手獎，而她的製作人大衞·福斯特（David Foster）獲得了年度最佳製作人獎。
