死而復生的嗜血殭屍如瘟疫般迅速佔領全城，整個城市在一夜之間成為殭屍之城。為了躲避殭屍的攻擊，兩個特種部隊警察和一個交通記者以及他的女友，逃到了一個荒廢的大型購物中心裏。斯蒂芬·安德魯斯 （大衞·艾梅治飾）、彼得（肯·弗裏飾）、羅傑（斯科特·H·雷寧格飾）以及法蘭妮（Gaylen Ross飾）四個人使盡渾身解數武裝自己，盡一切可能抵抗兇殘殭屍的襲擊。然而他們的抵抗卻不敵越來越多的殭屍，好景不長，殭屍蜂擁而至。雪上加霜的是，一大羣車手也發現了這個避難所。四人不但要躲避瘋狂的殭屍，還要同兇殘的劫匪對抗

創作背景
1974年，喬治·A·羅梅羅應邀參觀了門羅維爾購物中心，羅梅羅有幸一睹商場中的隱蔽區域，一位友人開玩笑説如果有前所未有的突發事件，肯定有人能在購物中心倖存下來，羅梅羅深受啓發，很快開始着手本片劇本。雖然羅梅羅和製作人理查德·P·魯賓斯坦無法在美國國內找到新片投資方，可意大利恐怖片導演達里歐·阿基多無意間得知了該片的拍攝計劃，作為《活死人之夜》的影迷和擁護者，阿基多迫切希望幫助籌拍這部經典恐怖片的續集，他與羅梅羅和魯賓斯坦會面商談，提出用影片的拍攝經費換取國際發行權。為了讓羅梅羅在創作劇本期間改換心境，阿基多邀請羅梅羅前往羅馬，兩人還在一起共同謀劃故事情節。在羅梅羅的爭取下，影片得以在門羅維爾購物中心實地拍攝，並得到了公司老闆的資助

拍攝過程
該片拍攝期間由於正值聖誕節前夕的購物旺季，所以拍攝只能在晚11點至翌日早7點之間進行。進入12月，劇組決定不再摘掉商場中的聖誕飾品，因為每次都需要耗費大量時間。為避免受到嚴重干擾，影片拍攝不得不暫停三週。在此期間，羅梅羅剪輯了已完成的膠片。
該片特效化妝師的湯姆·薩維尼曾效力於《活死人之夜》，作為小有名氣的恐怖片化妝師，薩維尼在影片拍攝期間每週都要為近300位臨時演員上妝，薩維尼有8名助手，其中的約瑟夫·佩拉圖在片中扮演了一位警官，並進而在殭屍三部曲的第三部《喪屍出籠》中領銜出演大反派
