Brief Introduction to the historic novel Holy Prison
In the early spring of 1622 A.D., the second year in the reign of Emperor Tian Qi of the Ming Dynasty, an absurd play of the royal Court was staged. The Emperor Tianqi had his high-ranking official Xia Wenzhong executed at the Ceremonial Archway Xisi in Beijing. Xia pled the persecutor Huqi in secrete to save his family before he was killed. Lured by interests, Huqi rescued Xia’s wife and three children at risk of life and settled in his hometown Suzhou, a southern city in China.
Huqi set up his business and together with Xia’s wife, brought up the three children. He underwent a series of extraordinary things, from keeping a slaughterhouse and a store selling baozi to running a business company, and from building a temple to serving as a monk. Later he assisted his son Dongtian in his business and made him leader in the business circle of Suzhou.
Huqi was a complicated figure with two-sided characters. He was unique and perseverant in the struggle with greed officials, powers, profiteers, bandits and foreign invaders, and meanwhile, he was the devil incarnate who took advantage of the common people;he was chivalrous, royal and brave, amiable, and meanwhile, brutal and bloodthirsty; He was sapiential and sophisticated, and meanwhile, lascivious and barbarous.
Ultimately, netted by history, he was put to death where he, once a deaths man, had beheaded the criminals.
