桃樂絲一生善於操作低成本的影片。她所拍攝的30部電影大部分都是性剝削電影（sexploitation films）。她的指導、剪輯和營銷技巧都是自學的，並且幾乎所有她的影片都是獨立製作完成的。她的電影的最大特點是經常剪斷平滑的支架攝影鏡頭，而以拍攝了煙灰缸、小古董以及演員的膝蓋、手和腳的切出鏡頭穿插其中。這樣一來省去了很多對白的場景，不但節省了錄音所花費的開銷，而且為影片構建了懸念效果，現在看來還展示出了一種黑暗古怪的幽默感。

在世期間，桃樂絲其實一直隱瞞了自己真實的年齡，最近由她的侄兒諾曼·維斯曼Norman Wishman公開了“姑姑”的這一秘密。桃樂絲出生於1912年7月23日，這樣算起來，她離開的時候已是九十歲高齡了。關於桃樂絲的逝世，一直致力於研究她的傳記作家邁克爾·鮑文Michael Bowen感嘆道“桃樂絲一生都樂於借用影像改造自己的精神世界，使其更加激動人心和有趣。相比經營現實的生活這些對於她本人可能更加有興趣”同時邁克爾還抱怨這位藝術家脾氣不是太好“晚年的桃樂絲不是很好相處，幾次採訪的過程令人十分的緊張和尷尬。”

早年，桃樂絲投生電影事業也並非無中生有的衝動，她的一個親戚——麥克斯·羅森伯格Max Rosenberg當時在電影圈頗有威望，麥克斯·羅森伯格當時身兼製片人，對於剛出道的桃樂絲此人不無引導和鼓舞的作用。但是桃樂絲的第一部影片並沒有利用這層“親戚”的關係，而是自己擔當起了製片人，獨立完成的。運氣好和膽識大可見一斑。1959年桃樂絲終於完成了她的處女作《太陽背後》(Hideout in the Sun) 。不幸的是，同年她變成了寡婦。不過影片本身還是為桃樂絲帶來了積極的影響，此片不但被譽為”剝削電影”exploitation的開山之作，同時受到後世者的追捧和效仿，為此在將近20年裏催生了大量同類型的影片。其中製片人大衞·弗雷德曼Dave Friedman是其中的佼佼者。 大衞·弗雷德曼監製的影片部部都堪稱經典。如H.戈登劉易斯H. Gordon Lewis執導的《血液盛宴》Blood Feast （ 1963年） ，《彩色的我是血紅色》Color Me Blood Red（ 1964年）和《2000年的迷》2000 Maniacs （ 1964年）。影迷習慣於大衞·弗雷德曼與桃樂絲對立起來。但事實是兩人私交甚好。 ^[1]
