Gulliver's Travels isan adventure story involving several voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, who is aneducated and trained surgeon. He speaks to the readers retelling hisexperiences at sea. Presented as a simple traveler’s narrative, Gulliver’sadventures are divided into four parts.

The first part issituated in Lilliput where he finds himself in the company of thousands ofminiature people called Lilliputians. The second is on the peninsulatype landof Brobdingnag, an opposite world from Lilliput where Gulliver becomes theLilliputian and everyone is a giant to him. The third part moves to the islandof Laputa, a floating island inhabited by theoreticians and academics whichoppresses the land below, called Balnibarbi. Finally in the fourth part hearrives in an unknown land. This land is populated by Houyhnhnms, therational-thinking horses who rule, and by Yahoos, the inferior brutish servantsto the horses who bear the image of a human.

喬納森·斯威夫特（Jonathan Swift）出生於愛爾蘭首都都柏林，著名作家，政論家，諷刺文學大師，以《格列佛遊記》和《一隻桶的故事》等作品聞名於世。斯威夫特是英國啓蒙主義時期的作家，但卻不同於大多數反對封建主義、謳歌資本主義的啓蒙主義作家，他對資本主義本質進行了無情的鞭撻，並反映了普通人生活的艱辛與困苦。同時他放棄了長期統治英國文學界的古典主義文學標準，進行現實主義創作，從而使他的作品具有極高的文學價值。
