主要從事多囊卵巢綜合徵及不孕不育的診斷和治療，特別是女性生育力評估及保護、輔助生殖技術治療中的反覆着牀失敗的相關治療。

李蓉教授長期致力於生殖內分泌紊亂對女性生育力影響相關病理機制研究及生育力維護應用基礎研究，主要學術成績包括：1. 建立覆蓋全國的社區女性生育力監控平台和生殖內分泌紊亂病生理機制研究平台；獲取人羣生殖內分泌紊亂疾病發病基線數據，修訂臨牀診斷標準，提高治療有效性和安全性；2. 闡明生殖內分泌疾病潛在影響卵母細胞表觀遺傳和體外成熟卵母細胞基因表達特徵，明確影響滋養層細胞侵入和胚胎着牀的關鍵基因，探索新型胚胎顯微操作和培養體系，提高胚胎利用率；3．確定生殖內分泌紊亂導致子宮內膜容受性下降的病理機制，獲得着牀窗口期子宮內膜分子標誌物；優化患者子宮內膜容受性臨牀策略，將難治性不孕患者助孕治療臨牀妊娠率提高3倍。研究成果發表SCI論文共計130篇，包括Cell、JAMA等，以第一/通訊作者發表SCI收錄論文34篇，單篇最高影響因子為45.217；獲批發明專利2項，實用新型專利3項；編寫我國輔助生殖領域專家共識3項和指南1項，國際指南1項。主編著作6部，其中《生殖內分泌疾病診斷與治療》為“十二五”重點圖書，獲2015年“中華優秀出版物獎”。多次應邀在國際會議上作大會主席和特約專題報告，包括亞太生殖醫學會年會、亞太生殖醫學會着牀前胚胎遺傳學檢測大師班、美國生殖醫學會年會、澳洲生殖醫學年會等，與國內外同行交流、推廣中國診療新策略和新方法。
