為乾旱區植被生態學(植被格局與過程)、生物多樣性及其保育、生態水文學(植被-土壤系統水量平衡與植被對水循環的調控機理)、荒漠植物生態適應對策及隱花植物生態學、土壤生態學。

任中國地理學會自然地理專業委員會副理事長、中國地理學會沙漠分會常務理事、中國生態學會理事、中國植物學會植物生態專業委員會理事、中國草地資源管理委員會常務理事、甘肅省生態學會副理事長、中國生態學會生態工程專業委員會理事、寧夏災害防禦協會常務理事、甘肅省歐美同學會副會長。先後在澳大利亞阿德雷得聯邦科工組織水土所(1999)、美國賓夕法尼亞州立大學生物多樣性研究中心(2001)和德國柏林工業大學生態研究所(2005)進修和高訪，多次參加國際會議並做會議邀請報告。任《中國沙漠》副主編、《植物生態學報》編委。

主持國家自然科學基金面上項目、國家傑出青年科學基金、國家自然科學基金重點項目、國家科技支撐計劃課題、國家重大專項水專項子專題和院地合作項目等多項，從事幹旱區恢復生態學、生態系統生態學、土壤生態水文學和沙地水循環研究，在國內外發表論文100餘篇(SCI收錄50餘篇)，合寫專著2部。曾獲中國科學技術協會“中國科學技術發展基金沙產業貢獻獎”1項(2001)、中國沙產業學會“全國防沙治沙先進科技工作者”(2003)、寧夏回族自治區科技進步一等獎1項(第一完成人，2007)、中國科學院“首屆王寬城西部學者突出貢獻獎”(2008)和甘肅省自然科學一等獎1項(第一完成人，2008)，國家科技進步二等獎(第一完成人)。

李新榮 ^[1]  1953年12月生，河南滑縣人．中共黨員，大專文化．湖北美術學院黨委組織部部長，兼機關第一黨總支書記、離退休幹部工作處處長。他1972～1987年在部隊期間．努力工作．積極進取．多次受到表彰和獎勵。1988年轉業到地方工作．曾任湖北美術學院總務處行政科長、美術系黨總支副書記等職，他每到一處，都能虛心學習．團結同志，腳踏實地開展工作。1990年在擔任行政科長期間．該科室被湖北省教委授予"湖北省高校後勤先進集體"稱號，在美術系黨總支工作期間，被院黨委授予"先進基層黨組織"稱號。擔任組織部長以後，他工作更加努力，在幹部管理、培養及選拔任用方面，在黨員的教育管理與發展黨員等方面．取得了顯著成績。他還結合工作，積極開展理論研討，先後撰寫了《實事求是的光輝典範》、《新時期共產黨員增強黨性鍛鍊之我見》等理論文章10餘篇，在院報和省以上刊物發表，參與編寫的《黨課教程》1997年由武漢工業大學出版社出版。1997年被中共湖北省高校工委、湖北省教委授予"優秀黨務工作者"稱號。
