Yamin，父親Shaul Yamin，以色列的伊拉克猶太裔，母親Claudette Goldberg Yamin（於2008年 3月31日去世，終年65歲） ，美國的德系猶太人後裔 由於前專業歌手的身份和在她兒子的美國偶像比賽時她的“ 火熱的精神”以及由Ryan Seacrest頒發的“Golden Idol for Proudest Family Moment Award”而聞名。Yamin 11歲時隨他的家庭遷移到 Richmond，弗吉尼亞州，當他14歲時他的父母離異，他的父親返回洛杉磯，自從第五季的美國偶像之後，他也遷居到洛杉磯市。

Yamin有一個同母異父的姐姐（Yamin has an older half-sister on his mother's side），Jodi Queen，已婚，兩個孩子的母親。還有一個弟弟，Scott Yamin，在北卡羅來納州的坎貝爾大學藥學院就讀。

Yamin在他十幾歲唱卡拉OK時首次發現他的聲樂天分。雖然他沒有受過聲樂方面的訓練，但是他在業餘時間在當地的爵士樂隊擔任主唱，並開始接觸Stevie Wonder Whitney Houston，和Donny Hathaway的音樂。他曾就讀於 Richmond 的道格拉斯第弗里曼高中， 在高二時輟學。後來他曾在當地的R & B廣播電台Foot Locker工作，使用暱稱E-Dub。一直到他參加美國偶像。

Yamin的右耳失去了90 %的聽力在16歲時被確診為I型糖尿病。 他平日需要戴胰島素泵 ，以幫助他應付他的糖尿病。
