在天才哥哥艾倫（麥克思·明格拉 Max Minghella 飾）的陰影下，艾吉拉（弗勞拉·克羅斯 Flora Cross 飾）覺得自己簡直沒有一點長處，父親索爾（理查·基爾 Richard Gere 飾）和母親米利亞姆（朱麗葉·比諾什 Juliette Binoche 飾）顯然更喜歡的是聰明伶俐的艾倫，而在他們之間，亦有着根深蒂固無法解決的問題。

在一次拼字大賽上，艾吉拉意外的展現出了令人驚歎的天賦，在贏得比賽的同時，她也獲得了走向世界的機會。可是，對於艾吉拉的成功，一家人並沒有表現出應有的高興與自豪，因為隨着艾吉拉的出名，一個埋藏在家族中多年的秘密即將被公之於眾。眼看着家庭陷入了危機之中，艾吉拉明白，她必須依靠自己的力量，重新將家人凝聚在一起。
