He served on the back-up crew for the 阿波羅8號, 阿波羅11號, and 阿波羅16號 moon missions. He also flew as the Lunar Module Pilot on the aborted Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970年. He was also scheduled as commander for the cancelled 阿波羅19號任務。He later flew five flights as the Commander of the space shuttle Enterprise in 1977年 for the Approach and Landing Test Program at Edwards Air Force Base and was in-line to fly in space again as a Shuttle Commander.
