埃德加·愛倫·坡（Edgar Allan Poe ,1809——1849），生於波士頓，父母都是流浪藝人，後被弗尼吉亞富商愛倫夫婦收養。坡生性敏感，行為放誕，雖先後進入弗尼吉亞大學和西點軍校，但都未能完成學業。養父幾經努力，最後與他斷絕了關係。坡後來生活在貧困中，直到在一家平民醫院病逝。作為現代主義詩歌的先驅，坡注意運用象徵、暗示的手法，追求詩的形式美，公開宣稱“為詩而詩”，並着力表現憂鬱、絕望、頹廢和悲劇的人生。

不能再吻你的額頭，
到了再見的時候，
我不得不説－
你是對的，我的生活
不過是一場夢。
但是，如果希望已經飛走
無論在夜裏，或在白天，
無論在幻想，或在虛無中，
那麼它是否會因此留下一些呢，
我們所看到、所感受的一切
不過是一場夢中的夢。
我站在
怒濤澎湃的海岸邊，
我的手中
攥着金黃的沙粒－
留不住啊，它們快速地
穿過我的手指而去，

You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;

Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?

Is all that we see or seem
