13~16世紀大批印第安人曾在裏帕布利肯河和布魯河流域建立農業社區。1541年西班牙探險家科羅納多為尋找黃金到此。1682年此地歸法國所有,法國皮毛商與印第安人在此進行頻繁交易。1803年根據購買路易斯安那協議讓給美國。1803 年歸屬美國。1861年建州後加入聯邦,為美國第34州。
一八三一年開始殖民。一八六一年一月二十九日成為美國第三十四州。以向日葵花(Sunflower)為州花。堪薩斯州別名叫做“向日葵之州”Sunflower-State。堪薩斯州箴言:“排除萬難,追求幸福”To the Stars through Difficulties.
州內大專學院有五三所,其中以堪薩斯大學(University of Kansas)為最著名。它位於州府以東之羅倫斯Lawrence,創於一八六四年,學生約兩萬。另外幾所州內著名大學為堪薩斯州立大學(Kansas State University)、福特海斯州立大學(Fort Hays State University)和維契託州立大學(Wichita State University)。

由西北角到東南角可分三區:
(A)西部是高平原,面積最大,約佔本州面積三分之二,高度有一千多公尺,地面已被切割,出現溝谷丘陵
(B)東北部冰磧區,面積很小,也被切割。
(C)東南部是大平原區,高度只有二百公尺。
全州地勢西高東低,大部地區是廣闊坦蕩的高平原,是地勢平坦而沒有樹木生長的地區,其中有河谷、小溪及峽谷,平均海拔610米。許多小丘陵高出平原面30~100米,如東部的弗林特丘陵,西部的斯莫基丘陵及雷德丘陵。西部靠近科羅拉多州邊境的森弗勞爾山(向日葵山)海拔1231米,為全州最高點。弗林特丘陵,意譯是燧石丘陵,因往日印第安人在這個丘陵區內尋找燧石,作箭頭用而得名。南部靠近俄克拉何馬州的弗迪格里斯河谷海拔213米,為全境最低點。

堪薩斯州屬温帶大陸性氣候,有嚴冬酷暑,温差變化大,但時間不長。1月平均氣温-3~1℃,7月平均氣温24~27℃。年平均氣温為13℃。生長期從4月中旬到9月中旬,年平均降水量東南部為1000毫米,西部為500毫米。堪薩斯全州的平均降水量約690毫米。西部降水集中在夏季,常有旱災和沙暴天氣。
堪薩斯州以天氣晴朗而聞名,堪薩斯州每年有超過275天以上的晴天。

堪薩斯州河流

大多數河流自西向東流。北部屬堪薩斯河流域,重要支流有布魯河、裏帕布利肯河、所羅門河、薩林河和斯莫基希爾河。南部屬阿肯色河流域,主要支流有錫馬隆河、弗迪格里斯河尼歐肖河和梅里德辛河。堪薩斯東北邊界的一角是密西西比河。本州河流由於地面向東南傾斜,適合築灌溉渠,已建有數百座小型人造湖。

堪薩斯州是全美重要的農牧業州,著名的通訊公司Sprint Nextel總部即位於堪薩斯州。
農業和製造業是堪薩斯州經濟的兩大支柱,前者為後者提供大部分原料。農牧總產值在50州內列第7位,全州有農牧場86000個,農場面積佔全州80%,屬小麥帶,小麥產量居全國之冠,有美國“糧倉”之稱;高粱佔第二位;乾草佔第四位;牛肉佔第四位,豬肉佔第八位。牛甚多,約七百萬頭,在五十州內列第四位。平均每一州民可有牛三頭。
威奇托是堪薩斯州最大城市和製造業中心,以食品加工、煉油和小型飛機制造着稱;其次是堪薩斯城,是本州東北部工商業城市,牲畜集散和肉類加工中心。橫貫大陸鐵路和公路通過堪薩斯州,州內外聯繫方便。設有堪薩斯大學、堪薩斯州立大學等數所院校。
全州有4300家制造廠和加工廠,能生產從飛機到鋅鑄件等各種產品,威奇托市擁有世界最大的野營用具廠,以生產加熱供暖設備、空調設備和履帶式雪上汽車著稱。其他重要產品有嬰兒食品、寵物食品、運輸設備、非電氣機器製造、活動房屋、拖車房屋、輪胎、顏料和洗碟機。
海斯市(Hays)是堪薩斯州西北方最大的城市,提供堪薩斯州西北區當地居民醫療,教育,和工商業所需。位於該市的福特海斯州立大學(Fort Hays State University)在堪薩斯西北部乃至全州扮演着重要的經濟角色,為堪薩斯州提供各方面的人才,促進區域發展。
麪粉加工製造業在工業中佔重要地位,肉類罐頭加工業發展迅速。礦產資源豐富,盛產石油、天然氣、煙煤、鋅、鉛和白堊,產量均富。木材有橡樹木及核桃木。在本州中部之奧提斯有世界最大之制氦工廠。 [2] 
據美國哥倫比亞廣播公司2022年6月16日報道,近日,美國堪薩斯州有超過2000頭牛因極端高温潮濕天氣而死亡。 [8] 
2022年7月13日,美國堪薩斯州州長勞拉·凱利辦公室宣佈,松下將投資約40億美元在美國堪薩斯州建立第二座電動汽車電池工廠,地點設在堪薩斯州德索托。 [9] 

堪薩斯州文化

託皮卡和威奇托兩個城市都有交響樂團。位於坎科底亞(Concordia)的布朗大歌劇院、位於勞倫斯的勞倫斯藝術中心及位於威奇托的第二世紀劇院旨有音樂會、戲居及其他的表演。堪薩斯州每年都會舉行許多藝術節,像在林茲伯格舉行的彌賽亞節、在温爾德舉行的核桃谷藍草節、在曼哈頓舉行的堪薩斯州民節。
堪薩斯州的藝術博物館有:威奇托藝術博物館、位於堪薩斯州立大學的海倫史本瑟藝術博物館、勞倫斯藝術中心、位於威奇托州立大學的艾德温尤瑞奇藝術博物館、位於沃西本恩大學的穆文藝博物館。堪薩斯州其他的博物館還有:位於哈奇森(Hutchison)的堪薩斯守宇宙及太空中心、位於威奇托的科學中心、位於霍斯德(Halstead)的堪薩斯健康博物館、位於堪薩斯大學的人類學博物館。以及位於海斯(Hays)市福特海斯州立大學(Fort Hays State University)的自然歷史博物館。 [3]
