周林1982年畢業於復旦大學數學系；1989年獲得普林斯頓大學經濟學博士學位，之後歷任耶魯大學助理教授、副教授；1993年獲得美國斯隆基金會頒發斯隆研究獎；1996年任杜克大學終身副教授；2001年起先後任亞利桑那州立大學林肯教授和凱瑞教授；2006年3月擔任上海交通大學經濟學院院長；2008年晉升為上海交通大學全校級講座教授，同年參與創建上海交通大學上海高級金融學院，並出任創院執行院長；2009年成為第一位在中國大陸高校任職的世界計量經濟學會院士；2010年至2018年擔任上海交通大學安泰經濟與管理學院院長；2019年12月出任香港中文大學商學院院長。 [1-4]

1982年，周林畢業於復旦大學數學系，之後留校在管理科學系任教。
1984年，參加教育部和美國經濟學會聯合組織的選拔優秀中國學生到美國攻讀經濟學博士的考試，以雙百分的成績獲得第一名，被鄒至莊推薦到普林斯頓大學。
1985年，進入普林斯頓大學學習，他的宏觀經濟學老師為伯南克——後來的美聯儲主席。 [13] 
1989年，獲得普林斯頓大學經濟學博士學位，之後受聘於耶魯大學，歷任助理教授、副教授。
1995年，任教於香港科技大學。
1996年，受聘於杜克大學，任終身副教授。 [15] 
1999年至2001年，任教於香港城市大學。 [1] 
2001年起，在亞利桑那州立大學任教，先後任林肯教授和凱瑞教授。
2006年3月，受聘擔任上海交通大學經濟學院院長。
2008年，晉升為上海交通大學全校級講座教授；同年參與上海交通大學上海高級金融學院的創建工作，並出任創院執行院長。 [5]

周林的研究領域為微觀經濟學的理論基礎，包括博弈論、機制設計、社會選擇和福利經濟學。 [5] 
周林早期研究選舉制度和資源配置機制，將經典的Gibbard-Satterthwaith定理推廣到具有公共物品的經濟環境中去，解決了一個近二十年沒有解決的佔優策略機制結構的問題，為後繼學者對經濟環境中佔優策略機制的研究提供了理論基礎。
20世紀90年代，周林提出了在合作博弈中一個新的解的概念，在後來文獻冠名為“周氏議價集”。
周林闡明瞭完全競爭經濟中議價集並不一定收斂到完全競爭均衡，是對微觀經濟學中核收斂定理的重要補充。
周林和其他兩位學者首創了關於博弈論的可驗證的結論問題，在各種不同的有限觀察的環境中找出博弈論理論的一些可驗證的結論。此外，周林為專業分工理論學派奠定嚴格的理論基礎，與楊小凱合作證明了在一個有遞增回報的完全競爭經濟模型中一般均衡的存在性及福利經濟學基本定理。 [2]

周林一直希望把歐美先進的教育理念和中國的教育實情結合起來，除了按照國際標準進行教學，也要積極借鑑國際同行經驗，充分發揮教授作為辦學主體的作用。在強調基礎研究的同時，他還鼓勵學院教師們將高深的理論“請”出學術象牙塔，在具體經濟問題中找到應用，為政府部門的重要經濟政策提供決策參考。 [8] 
周林認為，中國商學院應該“頂天立地”，“天”就是學術研究，能與國際頂尖學者對話交流；“地”是更多與中國管理實踐相結合。此外，中國內地過去的高校教師終身製造成人才沒有辦法流動，沒有一個優勝劣汰的過程。所以，終身教席是一個值得推行的制度。 [9-10] 
  • 講座報告
2018年10月，周林在南京審計大學作了主題為“Optimal Strategy-Proof Mechanisms in Quasi-Linear Models”的講座。 [11]

周林個人生活

周林出生於學術世家，父母同為數學系教授，培養過許多優秀人才。父母的“數學基因”對周林產生了至深的影響。周林的兒時偶像是陳景潤，儘管對文學方面表現出濃厚的興趣，周林還是毅然選擇了學習數學。 [8] 

周林人物評價

周林是當年鄒至莊留學計劃的佼佼者，是美聯儲主席伯南克的弟子，是國際主流經濟學界排名靠前的中國學者，亦是中國內地高校首位入選世界計量經濟學會院士的大學教授。 [13]  （中國經營報評）
