他的學術興趣在於使用實證方法研究各種法律和監管現象。 ^[1] 

在從事學術研究前，劉莊曾在北京市朝陽區團委工作。博士期間，他曾在芝加哥大學講授中國法，在北京大學、上海財經大學講授法律經濟學和實證法律經濟學課程。 ^[1]
