當昨天在北京釣魚台國賓館大堂裏見到冷琴時，記者一時很難將眼前這位年輕美麗的女子和網上那個“研究植物學、古植物學”並取得了相當成就的女科學家聯繫到一起。

對於記者“時尚、美麗”的稱讚，冷琴顯得非常謙虛。“從小到大，我對自己的外表從沒有自信。”她在自己身上唯一覺得滿意的地方是手。冷琴從不美容，不愛逛街，但她對外表儀容有一個起碼的要求，“要讓自己看起來賞心悦目。”她最享受同事這麼誇她：“冷琴看起來真挺順眼的。”

從外表的話題談及女科學家和女性的話題。“我從來都不認為，女科學家和普通女性有什麼不同。”冷琴並不能理解人們常有的那種觀點，就是女科學家的生活可能會很不女人，很沒有情趣。冷琴説自己也許是一個挺“悶”的人，最常做的事情就是在地鐵上看書，或者在辦公室待上一天。但在她看來，“身邊許多女性同事身上就頗具女人味。”她們會去逛街、美容、健身、跳舞或唱歌，在家裏，她們能燒一手好菜，朋友聚會，她們幽默、風趣、能言善辯……

冷琴很崇敬自己的一位老師，那是一個70多歲的女院士，“每次見到她，她都經過了精心的打扮，是那麼精神和優雅。而這些對她為之奉獻了一生的科研工作絲毫沒有任何影響。”冷琴最喜歡的一句話正是出自這位老師之口，“一位女性科學家，只有愛生活、懂生活，才會真正愛上科學、理解科學。”
