自从其初创以来，公告牌音乐奖一直由福克斯电视网播出，但是由于协议到期和其他一些不可预见的因素，奖项在2007年被取消。
2008年，重办该奖的尝试失败，该颁奖礼一直停摆到2011年。
从1989年~2006年，该奖项一直保持固定的奖项和名称设置。2011年，所有的奖项都被重命名为“最佳[奖项名]”（Top [award title]）的形式。所有奖项名中的“年度”字样都被去掉，部分奖项进一步做了调整。
2015年5月17日，2015年度公告牌音乐奖揭晓，美国女歌手泰勒·斯威夫特（Taylor Swift）夺得包括“年度最佳艺人”，“年度最佳女歌手”和“排行榜成就大奖”等八个奖项。 [2-3]
2019年5月2日，2019年公告牌音乐奖在美国举行，Drake包揽最佳艺人、最佳男歌手、最佳公告牌200专辑等三个大奖。A妹获得最佳女歌手、公告牌成就奖等，卡迪·b获得最佳说唱歌曲、最佳Hot100单曲奖。 [1]
2022年，2022年公告音乐奖提名揭晓，The Weeknd入围年度艺人等17项提名领跑。 [4]
2024年12月，Stray Kids在《BBMA颁奖礼》中获得 Top Global K-Pop Artist（全球最佳kpop艺人）奖项 [5]。
2024年12月13日，BBMA公告牌音乐奖颁奖典礼举行，霉霉Taylor Swift收获年度艺人、最佳专辑艺人、最佳创作者等10个奖项。 [6]
