伯裏

伯裏出生和成長在Clontibret, County Monaghan,他的父親是愛爾蘭聖公會校長。他先受教於父母，然後在Derry的福伊爾學院和都柏林的三一學院上學，在那裏他於1882年畢業，

1885年24歲的時候成為該學院的研究員。1893年擔任三一學院現代歷史講座的主席。他在這個職位上講授了8年。1898年他被任命為三一學院的欽定希臘文教授。這個職務與他的歷史教授職務同時進行。1902年他成為劍橋大學的欽定現代歷史教授。

伯裏一直在劍橋工作，直到他在65歲在羅馬去世。他被安葬在那裏的基督教公墓。

伯裏的著作的範圍，從古代希臘史一直到十九世紀的教會史，他的著作是學者和門外漢都喜愛的。他的兩部歷史哲學著作闡明瞭維多利亞時代的進步和理性的理想，這兩種思想指導着其餘歷史著作的思想。他還復興了拜占庭研究，引進了研究拜占庭管理制度的方法。在説英語的歷史學家當中，從吉本開始，拜占庭研究很大程度上被忽視。他有貢獻，親自和Frank Adcock and S. A. Cook 發表了這個主題的文章，在1911年的大英百科全書裏。他編輯了劍橋古代史，出版於1919年。
